out of the old hybrid. Been thinking about doing a Grant's Trail Century
since they opened this trail years ago and it was only 6 miles long (now it's
9.8 miles end-to-end). I wanted to checkout the new bridge so I thought this
seemed a good time to give it a go. Started and ended at the Kirkwood parking
lot. Very foggy and cool at the beginning. Very few trail users 5:45am on a
Sunday, little car traffic as well. Trail traffic picked up around 9am and
stayed busy for the duration. Stopped at my truck to refuel/get water after
each 19.6 loop. I saw many rabbits, lots of birds, a couple deer, and a
possum. People sightings: Rob Z, Keith & Kathy O, Lisa S, David G and somehow missed Stephen S. (fatigue I think). Love the new bridge, took one pic each time I crossed it. |

Thru East Saint Louis and on to Fairview Heights where I jumped on a paved trail thru Belleville and Swansea for 10-15 miles. Then to Mascoutah where I stopped for breakfast at a local coffee shop. Almost got hit buy an old guy in a truck pulling a trailer. I guess he didn’t see me as he pulled onto Route 15 highway. Lunch/dinner at The Frosty Mug Bar & Grill about 2.5 miles away in the actual city of Mount Vernon. I sat outside and drank a Fat Tire Amber Ale, tasted fine after 96 miles. For food I had a full order of the Horseshoe - a sandwich that was invented in Springfield IL. MS=27.0. | ||

Ran into some chip-n-seal, feels like you are riding on marbles. My riding partner Mark had a couple of flats on his rear tire so we stopped to fix that. Lunch was outside at Lewis and Clark Community College. The route featured lots of rolling hills and a big climb up the bluff from the Great River Road just east of Elsa IL. Attendance was down a bit this year due to COVID-19. Finished about 5pm. With Mark Weaver, Bob Nathe. | ||
